The north of Philippines is not as well known for its beaches as some of the more southerly islands, but one popular beach area lies around San Fernando, the capital of La Union province, south of Vigan. There is a good surfing beach to the north of the city at San Jaun but the most popular area lies a few kilometers to the south, at the village of Bauang. Here, a long stretch of sand is lapped by calm seas, and many attractive hotel have been established. Despite being 150 kilometers (93 miles) north of Manila, Bauang is easily accessible from the capitol, and large numbers of Manila residents visit the village at the weekends, using the beach and hotel not only for rest and relaxation but also for parties and special occasion.
